Teignbridge Strategy - make your views known by 18th August

Council Strategy
A six-week consultation period got underway on Tuesday 7 July 2015 and will run until Tuesday 18 August 2015.

The Council Strategy will set the tone for how Teignbridge works over the next decade, its vision, goals and how these will be achieved. It's important because it helps target resources and services more effectively to meet local needs and shows how Teignbridge's work benefits local people, businesses and visitors and provides good value for money.

People who live, work and visit Teignbridge can have their say on what issues they consider to be most important so the Strategy can be shaped around their needs.
During the six week consultation residents and other interested parties can have their say online at To go stratight to the 10 minute survey go to

Remember, that planning comes under Dartmoor National Park Authority and not Teignbridge.

24th and 25th May 2015
1pm - 5pm
£5 weekend ticket
Tickets for the Open Gardens are available at  Manaton Parish Hall and allow you to visit eleven wonderful and varied gardens between 1pm – 5pm.
The gardens can be visited selectively or on a way-marked “Gardens with Vistas” stroll or walk through the byways of Manaton and include a wide range of styles in an equally wide range of properties. However, most of the garden have one feature in common-- their different vistas over the surrounding countryside of Manaton`s beautiful Dartmoor settings.
The Parish Hall will see plenty of activity with Manaton’s famous cream teas being served from 2.30 and also stalls selling garden plants  and implements.

Proceeds from the Open gardens are in aid of the Parish Hall Environmental Sustainability, St Winifred`s Church and Age UK`s 'Men in Sheds' project. Please note that appropriate footwear for the byways is recommended; dogs on leads are welcome in the majority of gardens; children in full time education are free; and a map and guidance notes are provided with your £5 weekend Ticket.

A defibrillator for Manaton

A defibrillator for Manaton

About eighteen months ago I (Mary Wylie) was at a conference talking to people at a British Heart Foundation stand.

I saw that there was a notice about providing defibrillators to communities. This alerted my attention as my husband has had heart surgery, happily he has made a full recovery. You may have seen him walking our two little dogs, Ruby and Minnie, around the village.

So I thought that this would be a very good idea for our village, however l did quite a bit of research and found the prices seemed rather high to try to fund-raise within a small village such as Manaton. I also spoke to Maurice Cox in the Kestor as a central place that this could be kept and he agreed this is a good idea and would of course be available for collection 24 hours a day!

Recently in my role as Parish Clerk I received an email from a firm offering these machines at a reduced rate for Parish Councils. I mentioned this at the next meeting and was very pleased that all the members supported this idea. Our District and County Councillors have contributed from their available funds and we have received a contribution from the TDC Elector fund following support from North Bovey Parish Council. A recent quiz in the pub raised £66 towards the fund.

The machine has now arrived.  It is linked to the 999 service who will give the location and contact number for collection. You can also ring directly to the Kestor on 01647 221 626. We are also hoping that a speaker may be available for our Parish APM and a training session is being looked into for anyone interested, however the machine itself has audio instructions for anyone using it.

My thanks go to Maurice and Wendy for agreeing to host the machine and to Mike Jeffrey and George Gribble, our District and County Councillors, for supporting my idea.

Of course I hope this will gather dust in the Kestor and never be needed!

Lustleigh Society Event - 21st January

The Lustleigh Society

Ian Mortimer on “Centuries of Change”
Ian Mortimer, author of the Time Traveller’s Guides to Medieval and Elizabethan England, will be talking on the subject of his latest book: “Centuries of Change”, at the Lustleigh Society meeting on Wednesday 21st January. Prompted by a throwaway remark by a BBC newsreader in 1999, Ian Mortimer considers which century saw the most change in the West - and therein comes face to face with the question of what change is, and what causes it. Not one of the last ten centuries can be said not to be a 'time of great change'. The real question is: what message does it spell for our future?

The meeting will take place in Lustleigh Village Hall starting at 7.30 p.m.

Visitors £3 (Members free) refreshments available.
